In 2004, when two researchers at the University of Manchester won the Nobel Prize for isolating Graphene, they didn't have multi-million-pound technologies to help them. They used a piece of sticky tape and a lump of graphite. They didn't seek permission first - in fact, they ignored all of the lab protocols. And they found the world's strongest material.
In 1963, when Granada TV launched its innovative investigative show, World in Action, they didn't follow the protocols of the day either. They grabbed their hand-held cameras, ignored the rules and filmed the world as it actually was.
They didn’t wait for anyone to tell them what journalism should look like. They were criticised; they were told to slow down. But they did the opposite.
We think it’s about time to bring some of that Northern thinking to the stage. We can promise you now that The Media eader’s journalists won’t accept fluff.
We won’t be asking for permission as we have the most important conversations with media leaders that you won’t hear anywhere else. Because someone needs to ask the questions that others avoid.

We firmly believe that the Northern media industry deserves an event which combines celebrating success with having real conversations about our collective future, led by independent journalists.
So The Future of Media Manchester 2026 is designed for the media planners, strategists, buyers and sellers working harder than ever, and who want to see Northern media thrive.
Driven by our mission to champion the media industry, The Future of Media has consistently put the core media issues front and centre; allowing the industry to share and learn from the most prominent figures in the market.
