CEO of Foxtel Media, Mark Frain, has a simple philosophy for business: work hard, execute well and be present. All of which needs to be delivered at the speed of business, an unrelenting requirement that is only accelerating. Throughout his career Mark has been a driving force behind the redefinition of the television and video advertising model. Mark has also been a leading voice advocating for the shift from a traditional television spend to an ‘all video’ media buy taking the battle to the major global players, investing in capability that brings Attention and Outcome based metrics to the forefront. His journey to the top of the advertising world began in sports journalism following a golf scholarship to Leeds University. Starting off as a junior reporter at Golf World and Total Sports, Mark quickly made the jump into media and advertising strategy. After heading to Australia from London, Mark was initially working in a media consultancy in Sydney before he set his sights on joining Foxtel Media. Mark describes the defining theme of his career with Foxtel Media as the ability to see things differently and do things differently, without fear of failure. Win, lose or draw, you fail to learn and progress. After pioneering new forms of multi-platform integration for several years he was promoted to Sydney Sales Director in 2010. He was then appointed National Sales & Marketing Director in 2011 taking on responsibility for sales and revenue growth across all MCN divisions: TV, Digital, Mobile and Sport. He later became Chief Marketing and Sales Officer, before being made CEO of Foxtel Media in July 2018. Under Mark’s leadership and strong focus on streaming, Foxtel Media has been on an exponential rise, with digital ad revenue up 49% year-on-year* and 5 years of consecutive growth, whilst transforming the business from a broadcast centric model to one that is leading in streaming. Underpinning this was the most recent launch of an ad tier on Foxtel’s premium entertainment service, BINGE, whilst also steering the group into new frontiers on gaming and retail media. Mark is as driven out of the office as he is at work. An active supporter of Golf Australia, the Starlight Foundation, and the Cancer Council. A triathlete and three-time Iron Man competitor, though that is a few ago now, “Frainy” believes physical activity is a key contributor to high performance and his own personal balance at work. Outside of work, the requirement of speed and work ethic is never too far away from Mark as he and his wife Gemma bring up three boys, all of whom push the boundaries of competitive sport.
