Description

We want to know how a Pay TV or free-to-air platform drives consumers to its app when they are one app among many on a home screen (or within an app store) on connected TV devices (including smart TVs) they do not control. We also investigate how platform owners become the sovereign application, default UX and home screen on smart TVs they do not develop themselves. What business models persuade a smart TV OEM to give up control of their UX real estate, and what technologies support this kind of implementation? We review the progress of operator TV-OS projects across televisions they develop (as with Sky Glass) and televisions from established brands (like Xumo and Hisense). The future of the set-top box is on the agenda, and we want to know how skinny thin-client boxes can become, and how much of the UX can be moved to the cloud. We explore the role of customer premise equipment in supporting and presenting AI-powered applications in customer homes.
