Description

The Sports Rights Owners Coalition (SROC) is a forum of 50+ sports bodies and competition organisers committed to protecting the contribution sports make to the European economy and society. We discuss its work across the legal, regulatory and political spheres to ensure sustainable financing for sports – which means tackling piracy, which Mark Lichtenhein believes is an existential threat to the sports rights business. SROC has been lobbying the European Commission to embolden member states to demand faster responses from intermediaries and infrastructure providers when issued with pirate stream takedown notices, so we explore that work. We also discuss the impact of SROC’s message that sports piracy feeds organised crime gangs - and the associated consumer harm from financial fraud and malware.
